summer is good for the beaches but there will be so many people you won't be able to see the sand. but hey, you'll meet heaps of people! plus New year's is supposed to be awesome down there! but I imagine it's already expensive prices get jacked up for the summer months.

I went in april...after a really cold winter in Philly, so while the water was starting to get too cold for the Aussies it was perfect for me.

maybe get there in like Oct. for the spring I imagine that's a good in between time

Do you mean the best time of the year.....?

If so, I would recommend Dec/Jan - Come and experince an Ozzy Xmas and then go crazy for NYE around the Sydney Bridge. Its pretty cool. Also in January is Australia Day (26th I think).
The weather is perfect (this year was a bit warm, as we had a crazy heat wave) and the water is great for swimming in.

If you are planning to work in oz on a WHV for 6 months say, i would arrive around Sept/Oct as there are so many backpackers that come over in the summer time looking for work. So the early bird catches the worm as they apparently say.

Best time to go to Sydney is definitely just as your catching your connection to Melbourne ;)

did you mean what you wrote or did you really mean what is the best month to travel to Sydney? If you meant what you wrote. well in my opinion most the time their is no best or worst time of the month to go to Sydney unless it is December in which case definitely the end of the month to be there for New Years Eve. If you meant what is the best month to be there then I personally think December or January are but like someone else said things are expensive and packed in Summer and book out pretty early. I booked my New Years Eve accommodation for this year on New Years Day after the big night out.

Ah James...the rivalry continues into the 21st century I see.

Sydney-siders think Sydney is better, Melbournians know Melbourne is better.

SFCAL, what do you mean by the "best time of the month"? You could go at the beginning of the month, at the end of the month, or sometime in the middle - doesn't really make much diff. it's all pretty much the same.

NYE in both Sydney and Melbourne are good, but if you're coming for a visit, depending on where you live and the climate you're used to, weather wise, September is one of the best months to visit Sydney. Not too hot, but warm enough to enjoy outdoor activities. Sydney doesn't get the cool nights like Melbourne so it's really quite pleasant at that time of year. And if you were to decide to time your trip with the New Year, then I'd advise you to book your accommodation a good six months before hand, especially if you're considering staying in hostels.
Cheers.
