Can anyone tell me the names of good hostels to stay in in either Darling Harbour or Coogee bay?
I have heard the Wizard of Oz isn't any good.
Any advice would be appriciated.:):)

That's two 'tough' locations... I can only remember two hostels from my time in coogee as the biggest one that was there closed. One of them is Wizard of Oz and the other is Surfside Backpackers or something to that avail. You won't find any hostels on Darling Harbour directly as that is prime real estate and way too expensive for hostels but Wanderers on Kent (now called base) has recently been refurbished and is aparently quite nice and only about a block from Darling Harbour.

I think all three are bookable via the hostels system here which also includes some photos although I am not sure whether the refurbished ones are online yet with regards to WOK.

Cheers,

Sam

Thanks Sam.

Do you know of any small-ish hostels in Sydney that are good?

Hi Jo,

Well, it's tricky these days for the smaller hostels in Sydney. The big ones are all getting bigger and there are now 4 or 5 hostels in Sydney with 300+ beds. Even hotel businesses are getting into the action (base backpackers was started by Accor hotels) making it a lot more competitive and hard for the small ones to survive in Sydney city.

The smaller ones are usually in the outer suburbs like Bondi and Coogee. Bondi has a few nice ones; Indy Backpackers is one of the old timers...

Y on the Park and Footprints Westend are also very popular and slightly smaller than the biggies like YHA, Wake Up and Base WOK.

Cheers,

Sam
