Do you think the recession will have an effect on those wanting to get WHVs in the near future? I'm thinking of getting one for Germany and I am wondering if it will be possible to find a job! Am I being a worrywart? Has it gotten that bad yet? Do you think it will? Does anyone else have the same concerns? Discuss!
Most of your chances of finding a job in Germany are influenced by where you ask. There are several cities and areas with noteable high unemployment (mostly but not limited to the 5 eastern states), finding a job there has always been difficult and has just gotten harder.
People on WHV's usually take up menial jobs that don't require some intelligence, but not much German such as bar tending or other. These have always been easy-hire-easy-fire by German standards, so the chances should not have dropped that much.
Also the recession hasn't really hit Germany yet. While a lot of workers in construction and car-manufacture have already been laid off, this hasn't really trickled down into the general economy. Up until 8 months ago unemployment levels were significantly falling for the first time in years, an indicator that good times were ahead. From what I see the talk about the crisis is the crisis in Germany, it has gotten people really scared and thus less likely to spent. IMO the crisis is thus becoming a self-fullfilling prophecy.
I think it is like that in most of the world... the more we talk about it, the more frightened we are of actually spending, the worse it gets, and the more we'll talk about it. :/ It's a vicious circle, really!
