I'm greatly considering quitting my job and hitting the road traveling.

I have traveled quite a bit before but only for a few months at a time and have truly got the traveling bug, I plan on saving up a certain amount of money before i leave but am interested in ways of making money to top up my funds while I travel.

Any tips or advice that may come in handy would be greatly appreciated

Thanks

Danny

Teaching English as a foreign language is in demand in many countries and in many you do not need a TEFL qualification. Some countries may require you to have a degree.

Hello, congrats on wanting to make that big step towards quitting a routine, following a depressive cycle of working for someone else. Before you decide, think your plan through so that your plan "B" is secure and you have a backup for your backup. Place ad's online, several weeks before you arrive to that location for private english classes on local classifieds, you would charge the going rate, (and what you make from that would be play money) Dont anticipate impressive earnings from giving 30 min classes, unless you get a good response and schedule several students in one day, for 3-4 days, depends how long your stay would be, Be creative in your ad's, make them sound different from the norm, I dont know how you have your plan laid out, but it is doable. Try to get in with an online travel mag, see if you can sell reviews, or articles. doing this would get you going and could get you on your way to something very interesting and exciting.

Selling kidneys, unfortunately you can only do it twice.
But other than that, barwork, fruit picking, busking, artist's model in colleges.... they're all an option.

How many languages do you speak Danny? If you only speak English, then you're pretty restricted in what you can do once you leave the UK unless you have a particular skill which is in demand wherever it is you choose to go.

As other posters have already suggested, teaching English as a foreign language may be one of the options open to you, but most of those jobs are in Asia. If you want to consider that option, then a TEFL qualification will more than double your chances of finding a reasonably well paid job. You can take the course almost anywhere in the world, so determine where it is you want to be and then look for a course in that area. You'll find a list at TEFL Corporation and elsewhere on the web.

But now is not really a good time to go looking for a job. The world is in recession and people are losing jobs practically everywhere in the world. So you will be competing with those individuals wherever you decide to go.

Stealing from other travellers. You won't need a TESOL for that.

But I heard there are no more vacancies in hostels.

You could always sell someone else's kidneys. Which will bring me to my next post. "looking for travel companions"
