Hi Guys,

I require your assistance regarding the Schengen D+C Visa. I was issued Schengen Visa of the following type

Validity: 15-SEP 2008 to 14 SEP 2009
MULTIPLE ENTRY
Visa Type: D+C
Issued From : Italian Embassy Pakistan

I plan to visit Italy and other Schengen States in April 2009, but i came to know from few websites about mixed opinion, that validity of the C-type visa, when issued with D+C , is only for 90 days from the date off issue, and few websites states that its valid for 90 days from the date of first arrival to the first Schengen State (Italy in my case). It is requested if some authentic assistance can be provided on this.

As if its only valid for 90 days from the date of issue, it seems i cannot visit any other country other then Italy. If its valid from the date of first arrival, then i can visit the other Schengen States.

Regards
Jade

I dug a bit deeper following a recent post in this forum that asked a similar question, and I can now say with 99% certainty that a C+D visa allows free travel in the Schengen zone for the first 90 days following arrival.

In general, visa expiration dates are not counted from the date of issuance, but from the date of first use.

However: never rely on fellow travellers for visa information. The issuing authorities are the only persons that can really give definitive answers.

No, you cannot use this visa for visiting other Schengen countries any longer.
It is valid for Italy for one year (D) and has authorized the travel to other Schengen countries (C) for first 3 month period (Sep 2008 to Nov 2008).
You should have had used it in September 2008 to go to Italy because that was the purpose for what it had been granted for (study I assume). You may not even get entry to Italy on that visa now nor may you use it to travel to other Schengen countries.
In general holders of long term national visa (type D) staying in Italy are issued a residence permit (Carta di soggiorno) which also authorizes the travel to other Schengen countries. The type C visa only backs-up the travel to other Schengen countries from the first day while the issue of the residence permit is still in process.

Ok, sorry - Papenburg is right.

When I wrote my first answer I assumed that you were currently residing in Italy holding a Carta di soggiorno and that your were referring to your Carta di soggiorno as a D+C visa (which it essentially is).

So that means, under such situation its not possible for me to visit other Schengen States. Or its not possible to visit Italy and other Schengen States both

Jade, could you pretty please give the full story?

- What is your citizenship?
- Where do you live?
- Why did you apply for the D+C Schengen visa? What was the purpose of getting one?
- Why did the Italian authorities give it to you? Because you wanted to be a student in Italy or what?
- Where have you been since you got the D+C? Have you been to the Schengen area since Sept 08?

Essentially your whole life that is related to the visa. It will help me understand what is going and thus I might find a solution for you.

T_maia,

Okay here are my details:

I am Pakistani National.

I got my Schengen (D+C) visa from Italian embassy in Pakistan.

The reason for which i got the visa, i applied for the educational course of 9 months in Italy and got it in SEP2008 - SEP 2009.
