I'm hoping to go down to Peru towards the end of the year and am hoping to do one of the treks to MP. I've heard that the Inca Trail is really touristy and have been recommended to try Salkantay as an alternative. However, I'm on a budget (as always, makes the trip last longer!) and I was wondering whether anyone knows how much I could expect to pay or could point me in the direction of a cheap (preferably local) operator please.
I work for a Peruvian tour operator and the average price for the Salkantaty - Machu Picchu (5 days/4 nights) trek is around US$ 350 per person!
We are Lima based and have offices in Cusco as well!
Best of luck,

That sounds like an average price. It can done for less though, if you make your own arrangements. You'd basically need
- train tickets
- 4 or 5 other people besides yourself
- a guide who knows the trek (and preferably, that is able to cook)
- tents, sleeping bags and cooking gear
- food and water
- a horse to carry your stuff
Depending on how experienced you are in trekking and the stuff you are already travelling with, I'd say you should be able to bring costs down to less than USD75 per head this way. But, it takes time to sort everything out, and you'd need to speak sufficient Spanish.
I'm so sorry for my commment, but I think the price of Salkantay trip is very expensive. Salkantay is wonderful and can be make for itself. In Cusco you only need ask the coordinates and the next step is only go.
Maybe, the comment is becuase im a sudamerican, but in this form you win another kind of experience, not the classic tourism experience
