Plan on your own or follow travel agency?

Travel Forums General Talk Plan on your own or follow travel agency?

Hey, I would like to ask for some advice. I am planning to visit South East Asia's countries and still don't know either to plan the trip myself or just follow a travel agency's package. I only travel in pair, with my sister. Is it save for us to travel on our own or should be use travel agency? Which way is more fun? And what other preparation I should make for this to happen smoothly?

Planning a trip on your own is half the fun and the internet makes everything so much easier.

Depends how well you get along with your sister.

If I went with my sister somewhere I would prefer it if somebody else (=tour operator) did the planning, this way we wouldn't be able to get into a fight over it. If I did all the planning she would expect me to do everything, then point her finger at me when things went wrong as well as accuse me of being selfish when everything went right: "We only ever go where you want to!". Yet at the same time she refuses to make any sort of decent input into what, where and when or tell me the things she wants. :(

If your sister is the same...

But if it was just me, I would always go on my own. For most of my trips it has so far worked out cheaper when I did it myself. Plus planning it myself I get to see everything I want when I want it.

Haha, I get exactly the same thing with my girlfriend! I think it is just because we care more about out travel experinces than they do. The only input i receive from her is when she wants to do some mega expensive like go to the opera in Las Vegas, or visit Disney Land in LA or go on the most lavish boat trip around whitsundays!!
When i say it is too expensive and not in our budget, she makes me feel guilty and says "We only ever go where you want to!"

Arh!!

I agree that planning is half the fun of travel, and today, the internet is ready and waiting! I do my own planning, but do use the advice of others. Since you already have a built-in companion, I suggest you plan your own trip. SE Asia is very easy. I would shop carefully for airfare (probably want an open-jaw ticket, use the multi-destination option on a consolidator's/airline's website), use Air Asia to hop between countries, and only make an initial hotel reservation in each country. Now all you need is a visa (where required - visa on arrival works well for Vietnam), and you're set to go. Travel with a smaller backpack (I use a 30L pack successfully, and carry extras/gifts in another bag that I buy enroute). I do use local travel agents to take city tours/treks, but in Vietnam there are free guide services in Hanoi (Hanoikids) and Saigon (Saigonhotpot). I just returned from Bangkok, Chiang Mai, Hoi An and Hanoi if you need more info - PM me then.

Not only is fun to plan your own trip but it's usually cheaper as well. There is much more info on the net than any travel agency.
