Travel Forums North America 5 days of travelling in USA. Where should I visit ?

HI Folks! I am student from Malaysia going for Work and Travel USA this summer. I am planning to travel after my working period and I only have like 5 days of travelling period for to travel USA. For your information I will be working at HardRock Cafe, Gatlinburg, Tennessee.

For this, I would appreciate if anyone could guide me on where should or must I visit with only 5 days to travel ?

I am torn apart choosing between New York and San Francisco. I checked few tour agency such as www.suntrek.com and www.trekamerica.com. Both offer many tours but I dont know where should I choose. Some say that following tour is quite expensive than traveling alone. I Anyone could justify this ? Should I travel alone or follow tour ? Any other tour agency you guys could suggest ?

I am really looking forward to travel USA. I believe I would have a wonderful time there !

P.S I will be traveling from 1st of September 2009 and will be traveling alone.

Regards
Jasper Ng

You can't beat San Francisco, and you can't find a more Asian-friendly place either! No doubt about it, you'll be the center of suspicion in Gatlinburg (don't know if they've ever met a Malaysian before?)

If you choose SF, you most definitely do not need a tour.

I'd opt for New York City. It's off-season and the weather will be nice. New York is a very diverse city and easy to navigate traveling alone. Get a good guide book and enjoy the adventure.

Here I go , facing contradiction between san francisco and NY .. >.<

Okay what Im looking forward are :

- Theme park ( atleast one theme park in USA )
- Sight- seeing
- Inexpensive Shopping!
- Meet new people
- Hoping could travel in group =)

Do they have themepark in NY or nearby ? .. I do know they have Six Flag in LA. ...

I dont know about NY, but the theme park in SF is in San Jose- Great America (60kms south of SF). You can take Caltrans or even Bart, but caltrans is easier from SF) SF has lots of sightseeing places obviously like NY. But if you watch CSI or NYPD Blue or Friends etc...... its like you have already been there. see the same things you see on those shows all the time, if u know what I mean. When I think of NY, I dont think of inexpensive for anything. Just my opinion. ANd this time of the year, youre almost garaunteed 0% chance of rain and no humidity apart from the fog in SF as for NY, hurricanes in the southern US can bring clouds and rain, if theres a hurricane, and alot of humidity

my first suggestion is miami,

but if you are thinking between SF and NY. I say go to NY. as much crap as I give my brothers to the north, they do have an interesting city. everyone should experience it at least once. and there is a six flags 45mins south in Jackson, NJ.

but I still say miami if you are going to go for a vacation. it's fun. it's a got the whole big city feel to it in downtown miami, but it's also got the vacation feel to it on miami beach. it's definitely more relaxed. beautiful beaches, the everglades, great food, beautiful people, great weather (if there is not a hurricane)

NY can get old real quick if you are not crazy about big cities. there is nothing relaxing about NY.

I did consider Miami. But i realise that by the time I go which is September, the summer season has already ended. I dont think I get to see chicks in the beach anymore...

I know NY is closer. But I wouldnt want to decide where to visit just beacuse it is close to NY from Gatlinburg. In fact, San francisco is actually closer when I want to return to Malaysia.

Anyway, my main aim is to travel as many places as I want. I do realise most of you suggest to travel alone and not joining tour. It is true that I will be tie to their schedule . But joining tour allow me to get to know new people and as a group we would be much closer. thats one advantage.

If im going to NY, are there any tour that can take me to Niagara Fall ? like 1 day tour ? In my opinion NY is more like historical visit as they have popular monuments like statue of liberty. I would prefer exciting and fun experience like jungle treking, riding highest roller coaster, bungee jump ? lol, taking helicopter sort of things... I do realise NY has this helicopter ride but so as grand canyon. =/..

Also, the reason I wanna go san francisco is because there are tour that can bring me to 4 places in the West which are SF , LA , Las Vegas, Grand Canyon. Do you think it is much worth it to vist these places than only New york ? Is it possibvle to travel alone to these places ? WIll it be more expensive than joining tour ? The tour costs about 800-900 USD and I have to sleep in camp site.

I wanna ask since there are so many hostels and ways of booking it . HOw do I know which one is reliable and is not a fraud ?

I came across Jazz in the villa in NY. I found it very cheap as it only costs $21 per night. with 5 nights, it only costs $100 ! wow.. i could save alot for my shopping in NY lol.

mm but Im not sure how reliable is those site. such as www.twizi.com. or villagehostel.com .. etc etc ... so many and this confuses me

it'll still be summer in miami...

Maybe san diego is good idea for you. warm weather, beaches, mexico is just a walk away, you can get to the grand canyon and vegas pretty quickly the deserts of the southwest might be interesting...

nyc is too far from niagara for a one day trip. it's definitely possible but you'll be on the road 15 hours out of the day.

Even though I haven't been to many cities in the States, I totally agree with Cool Paul. You should consider going to Miami. I have recently visited the city and it feels like a different country. You would definitely meet new people if you stay in a hostel.

I personally don't like NYC, probably because it was always raining, raining and raining whenever I was there. It feels as if there are two types of people in the city: tourists, and residents who are depressed about having to go to work everyday. That was the impression I got, at least. If you choose NYC, you should consider going to Boston for a day.

Ok, so admittedly I havent been to San Francisco, but New York has all of what you are looking for! NYC IS a theme park...just take a ride in a cab, and you'll feel like youre on a rollercoaster!!! NYC has inexpensive areas of shopping...it's not all Macy's. Plenty of places to buy a cheap knock-off Prada/Gucci/Coach bag and some pirated DVDs! As far as sight seeing, you can see pretty much whatever you want to see....and probably some stuff you'll wish you could "un-see"!
I would say that you probably will find that if Hard Rock has other workers from different parts of the globe, that you surely will be able to find/make some friends who would want to travel with you! I would say because you havent been to either of the cities, how could you make the wrong choice by choosing either of them??? (Although I do admit I am somewhat EAST COAST biased.....)
Have fun!
