Driving the Alaska Highway

We're hoping to drive from Vancouver to Anchorage and back in a 3 week period around end of April. Could anyone suggest cheap places to stay along the route...and any advice on hire car companies would be gratefully received...every place we've looked at so far seems really expensive. We would consider buying a used car as the next leg of our trip is down West Coast America,
