I'm travelling to Peru in June for 16 days. I'm thinking Lima, Arequipa, Cusco/Machu Picchu, Lake Titicaca and finishing in La Paz, Bolivia.

When I go away I like to book as I go and don't really like booking in advance. I'm a little worried that in peak season I'll struggle for accomedation. I know if i want to do the inca trail I need to book up now. But if I just get the train up to Machu Picchu will I be able to get train tickets in Cusco? The whole Machu Picchu thing looks expensive has anyone got any idea's how much it will cost for the train etc?

Also any accomedation advise would be most welcome.

Thanks

Rob

Hi Rob,

Your itinerary sounds great!
I am currently in Cusco and just got back from Machu Picchu.
For trains you need to check Peru Rail website. I was told that you can book tickets straight from the internet, but it didnt work with us, so your best bet is either to go to one of the offices in town centre in Cuzco (next to the market). In the office they accept cash only (and you can pay in US dollars). Train tickets can get fully booked quickly, so I would advise a week in advance at least, in the peak season.

Ive just had a quick look on the PeruRail website and June is busy a rough guide to prices is $48 for backpacker train one way and the vistadome is $71. Also i have noticed that now the backpacker train doesnt anymore leave from Cusco station you would have to take a taxi to Poroy. This is just outside Cusco and means the train doesnt have to do the crazy switchback which takes 30mins.

Cusco has loads of hostel/hotels. If your just going to turn up at a hostel always ask to see the room before agreeing to take it.

If you want any acomodation help send me a message and i'll tell you where i stayed. Also you can get really cheap bus travel between Cusco - Puno(Lake Titicaca) - Bolivia
