Dear Members,

I'll be in BA in July and I was wondering what part of the city will be best to stay.

I was thinking somewhere in the city not far from the sea port (planning to go to Uruguay as well).

Can anyone kindly recommend the best area of the city to stay please?

Regards,

Kkool

Hi kkool,

I would highly recommend the neighbourhoods of either Palermo Viejo or San Telmo. These are beautiful laid back areas of the city. Many of the artists and bohemians in Buenos Aires used to live in Palermo Viejo but, over time, moved to the San Telmo area. So, both places are full of weird artisan shops, lots of great bars and restaurants and have a really great nightlife.

Can recommend the HI hostel in either neighbourhood. Have stayed in both. Let me know if you need any other help.

I personally think that both Palermo viejo and San Telmo are WAY too touristy. Last time I stayed some place down Corrientes avenue, which was central, very nice and not too expensive. I'd be happy to give you the address.

I agree with bentivogli about San Telmo being touristy. I stayed there last April - but I didn't really mind the touristiness. Since I was traveling alone, it gave me the opportunity to find other solo travelers to join in for all my sightseeing expeditions. Finding others was quite effortless. Just my 2 cents worth of input.

Hey,

Yeah it's in San Telmo.

Its a good place, 10-15 mins walk into florida ave. Its a very safe, modern and friendly place. 4 bed dorms for 50 pesos a night. double room by yourself if that your thing for 180 pesos.

Free tango lessons at the hostel on tues and fri.. BBQ (parilla) nightly for 45 pesos including beer, staff are the best I have come across in Buenos Aires! Book in advance and it's a popular place...

As normal in Buenos Aires you need to be a little careful at night with your money/credit cards just in case you run into undesirables. Don't be flashing cameras around and wearing flashy watches. This is normal for touristas!! Just play it safe and don't bring unwanted attention to yourself and you will be fine.

a taxi (if your too lazy to walk) into say Recolletta is around 10-15 pesos depending on the cab driver. If he see's that you have no idea then you will go the scenic route! But shit happens and that's life in another country..

I have some suggestions for you!

Galerias Pacifico on Florida ave. (around 700 I think) is a very nice shopping mall. Downstairs is a great foodcourt so if you want to eat and shop then this is the place!

Manuel Tienda bus from the airport to your hotel. 45 pesos.. Great service by modern bus.

Change your money in the airport just outside the bag xray on the right hand side. after you collect your luggage. (DONT use the cambio's near the luggage pick up carousels... Go past them and there is a small group of windows on the right hand side which is a bank. The rate is much much better and no commission!

Head for the best steak in Buenos aires... 2 options..

1st is desnivel Address is 858 Defensa ave (5 mins walk from hostel!) the best steak is 'bifo del lomo'!

2nd is La Chakra on corientes Ave.... taxi or 15 mins walk down plaza del mayo.

I have plenty of other tips so just ask if your stuck.

jay.:)

Hi there! i would reccommend San Telmo for weekends, but you better stay around Palermo during the week, i think thats possitive because you will meet locals that way and you´ll be closer to everywhere you want to go to..
San Telmo could be a bit rough late by night, or just lonely.. nothing bad will happen, and its also a beautiful area, but i´d rather Palermo to stay, anyways one place is not far away from the other.. a few minutes by car/bus will take you..
Check sabatico travelers hostel, great place, stayed there!

Enjoy Bs As!

Dear All,

Thank you very much for all your contributions to this post.

It is well appreciated!

Can anyone tell me what part of BA is near the Buquebus terminal? Also is that near the EZE airport as I need to travel from Colonia del sacramento to EZE airport in the morning?

Thanks for your help
