This thread is marked as being about Thailand

Hi guys,

I'm travelling for my first time to South Asia in a couple of months- June 30th (wrong date in title sorry) and I have been absolutely estatic with excitement about going however this has been crushed slightly by the protests in Bangkok as this is the airport we would be arriving in!

I know its quite a while away but would anyone advise us on changing our destination particularly Bangkok now or do you think that the protests will have cleared up by then?

Sorry if this seems a bit silly but would prefer to be safe than sorry!

Thanks Alot!

I know its been all over the news today about the riots in Bangkok, but it is still a long time until you fly here. There have been many reports today about problems throughout areas of Bangkok, but there are other areas that have been enjoying Songkran celebrations.

The government have also assured ALL Thai's & foreign visitors that the major "hubs" ie train stations, airports, bus stations will be kept secure at all costs. The lessons learnt to the Thai economy were very hard following the blockades that were allowed to take place in December last year, and will not be repeated.

I personally think you should just monitor what happens over the coming days & weeks, and make a final decision by mid-May, when it should be much clearer what direction the country is going in.

I hope my information is both practical & useful to you, and will be happy to offer further guidance if you require it.

Thanks Kevin your post reassures me that my travelling will end up going ahead most likely!
Glad to hear that other parts of the country are not affected by the protests and may end up that we just have to travel to those places rather than Bangkok etc.

Well I hope that it is all over by the end of the week for you, are you just going to be staying in Bangkok or travelling to some other places?

I have heard from some people that other areas of Thailand are fine, and also that even in Bangkok people are still having fun and people are getting along with day to day business however they are not approaching any government buildings etc!

Maybe you could see about flying to Mumbai before hand and staying there for a few nights if it still isn't over as we have to change over at Mumbai to get to Bangkok when we fly out. Or flying to another airport in Thailand?

A lot of people will be asking similar questions in the next few days and the short answer is it is too early to tell.

It could result in another change of govt by one means or another.
It has definitely spoiled Song Khran for some.

On the other hand I've spent a couple of days driving about in Pattaya and this afternoon you wouldn't have believed there had been any "aggro" at all this week-end....the water fights have started and the bars are trying at least to give the impression of business as usual.
However it did seem the traffic was much lighter than expected and the crowds on beach road seemed to be Thai Song Kran revelers in the main.

So, watch this space.......................

Hey mcgiligan

We are planning on only staying in Bangkok for a few days aswell then move to laos and then head down south some more to Cambodia and then maybe over to Vietnam! I'm really looking forward to it!

I'm hoping that even if there is still some trouble in Bangkok then it will not affect us travelling around other parts of Thailand and Cambodia or Vietnam!

Where are you flying from? Were flying from London Heathrow.
