Me and a mate will be landing in Kuala Lumpur before making our way North towards Thailand.

I have a friend who went through Malaysia last year whilst backpacking...he basically said there wasn't anything to do and the quicker I can pass through the better...

Is this true? I've heard some good things about the place and would like to judge for myself.

Where are the best places to visit in between KL and the Thai border?

I find it strange how your mate would say there is nothing to do in Malaysia - there is loads to see and do. I spent a month there and there are still loads of places I haven't been to.

I'd recommend KL, Melaka, Cameron Highlands and Taman Negara National Park and then head up to the Perhentian islands for a few days. This is fairly close to the Thai border so after the islands you could cross into Thailand.

I would like to visit the Perhentian Islands particularly however I've read that it will basically be monsoon season when I'm there (January)

You could try the other side then, and go to Penang or Langkawi instead where I don't think it's monsoon at that time of year.
