Travel Forums Central/South America & The Caribbean 2 month trip to South America for 1st time female traveller?

Hi there, I'm new here and just wanted some thoughts/opinions and advice on my trip I am planning for approx 2 months in SA (maybe more).

I am 26 years old, a lone female and have never backpacked before, although I like to think of myself as intelligent and streetwise. I speak basic Spanish and am having lessons soon to improve it before I go.

I intend to fly out on the 3rd August and I think the first month or so is pretty sorted (see below) but I want some opinions on the 2nd month of travel...who knows - I may end up staying longer...?

I currently have a budget of £4k, to include buying flights and equipment with.

So far:

Fly to Buenos Aires early August and spend a few days on my own seeing the sights and generally becoming acquainted with the culture .
(somehow) Travel to Salta to start a 22day organised tour which takes me through Bolivia and Peru seeing all the main sights, Titicaca, Macchu Picchu, Inca Trail, Jungle etc...ends in Lima.

From here (Lima) I plan to go it alone (or maybe tag along with other travellers I meet on the tour.)

What I'd like to do is:

Make my way up to Equador (via the coast?) and perhaps volunteer somewhere in Equador? I have checked out lots of sights and will make a decision in due course, unless anyone has some good ideas - I'd like to get involved with a community for a couple of weeks and help with building, conservation.

Then get accross to Manaus - what's it like here? Or should I head elsewhere?

Making my way down to Rio - again spend a few days exploring and chilling out?

Doing an excursion to Iguazu Falls for about 3/4 days as I've been seeing as the recommended time.

Returning to Buenos Aires for return flight home

As you can see the second part of my trip is fairly loose...
Your thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks, Charlotte.

If you want my opinion, you're cramming WAY too much in just a 2-month period.

You might be able to do Argentina-Bolivia-Peru-Ecuador if you hurry, but that already is a rather dense. No way you also manage to include Brazil.

I'd recommend doing something like:

BsAs - northwestern Argentina - western route through Bolivia - Titicaca, Puno, Cusco, Machu Picchu - eastern route through Bolivia - straight across the continent to Rio - Iguazù - BsAs.

This you can do comfortably in 2 months, taking overland routes, maybe allowing for some stops along the way.

yeah but it's doable as she is doing a guided 22 day tour!

I say go girl!

I'm in Buenos Aires right now and its a great place. See my post under accom in Buenos Aires and then your will have no probs for your intro to SA!

Any questions then just ask!

Jay.
