The best way to see the best of Austria

Hey all,

Need some advice about travelling to Austria. I have around 4 days (August bank holiday) and want to see the best of Austria. Is it posible to cover Salzburg and Vienna in 4 days?
I would ideally like to fly in and out of Salzburg (getting cheap tickets out of London ) and then take the train between Salzburg and Vienna.

4 days is not enough time for both Salzburg and Vienna. Salzburg is the best of Austria, spent your 4 days there and make some day trips into the countryside. Berchtesgaden, Bad Ischl, St. Wolfgang, there is so much to see. Have fun, you'll love Salzburg!

The national buses and trains are excellent in Austria, as long as you stick to them and not international services. Then again, Eurolines Coaches travel quite extensively in Austria with many destinations inside the boundaries - and they're good value for money.

I would also include Werfen on the possible daytrip list from Salzburg. The castle hohenwerfen, and the ice caves of Eisriesenwelt are worth seeing, and it is only a short ride by train from Salzburg.

For me it would have to be decided by the flip of a coin, if I have to choose between these two destinations. I love Vienna, but if you have never been in Salzburg it's worth going visiting. 4 days is just enough for Vienna, but also enough for Salzburg and a couple of daytrips. I would not divide the time between both of them.

I've decided to stick to Salzburg and do Vienna some other time.

As for the day trips from Salzburg, can you please point me to where I can look up local train and bus servies with timings and fares ??

www.oebb.at is the link for the traincompany in Austria. (as for the rest of Europe, you can also search on the website of German Railways. www.db.de) Both sites have English versions.
