Hello Friends,

I would like to know whether i can travel to italy in 1st week of May 09.
I have single entry valid Type C visa from Holland from 14th april to 7th May 09. I have resident permit of UK.
Last week, I didnot travel to holland due to late arrival of my passport(with visa) and I had to cancel my trip.
But now I want to go to Italy(only) from London from 1st may to 4th May.
Can you suggest if its possible to travel, even though i m nt travelling to holland.

Thanks
Sumit

You should be able to, since the Italians cannot issue you another visa for the first week of May.

But to be on the safe side I would do it the following way: Go to Amsterdam, pass the Schengen immigration controls and catch a flight to Italy from Amsterdam. Fly to the UK from Italy.

Thanks..
I actually thought of doing that but flight tickets has gone very high during those holidays.

Should i take the chance?
Is there something specific they can ask?

I mean i will carry all my previous travel plan tickets hotel reservation n stuff.
But can they ask like if i m travelling to holland during those days or something like that?

What should i say in that case?

Thanks
Sumit

The problem is that you can be accused of cheating on your visa application. Your visa was issued by the Dutch for a trip to the Netherlands, now you show up at the Italian border with the same visa and want entry to Italy. That is going to rise some questions.

It would be possible to go to Italy whithout any problem if you could reasonably tell them that you are going to the Netherlands after your weekend in Italy. But your visa is only valid until 7th of May, so your main destination cannot be the Netherlands. If you enter Italy on the 1st of May, stay there until 4th of May and then go to the Netherlands until the 7th of May you'll spent more time in Italy than in the Netherlands, thus Italy is both your main destination and your point of entry and your visa should have been issued by the Italian embassy.

The best option will be to tell the Italian authorities the truth, that your trip to the Netherlands didn't happen and that you are now using the Schengen visa for a weekend in Italy. If you had known in advance that... bla bla ... you are very sorry and next time you'll get your visa from the Italian embassy.

Bring all the documents you'd need to apply for a visa from the Italian embassy, show that you got enough money to pay for the trip, booked flight ticket back to the UK, hotel or hostel reservation in Italy, etc. The documents from your planned trip to the Netherlands are not so important, the Italians will want to ensure that you are not penniless and homeless in their country and that you'll return to the UK from Italy if they let you in.

Its true I was planning to travel to holland. :(( Spent so much money and
Its so depressing. I dont know to do.

Anyways, I will go on this trip. Hopefully he will do some mercy on me.

Thanks a lot for your suggestion.

One more last questions as you said I can go to amsterdam and then if I take a flight to italy, Will they check again for visa.??

I mean once i entered through holland( with single visa Type C) i can go to any country as long as i dont leave for any non-schengen country.

Thanks 7 Regards
Sumit

No, they will not again check for visa. That's one reason why I suggested it.

The other reason is that you can apply for a Schengen visa either from the country of first entry or from the country of your main destination. If you went to Amsterdam first the Netherlands would be your country of first entry, so all would be fine with your Dutch-issued Schengen visa.

yes but flights tickets are like too much and then i have to take an extra leave :(

I checked with the VFS visa center who handles the visa application for holland/italy in london.
They are saying since i have a genuine reason so i should be able to travel, well this does bring some smile on my face.

Anyways i really appreciate your suggestions thank you so much. Have a good day.

Personally I'd sooner take Maia's story seriously than VFS's.

There is a very real chance that you will be denied access at the Italian border, for the reasons Maia outlined in an earlier post. Especially, I might add, if you have a 'foreign' (i.e., non-white) appearance. Due to its being one of the more problematic outer borders of the Schengen area, Italy is usually extremely strict in enforcing migration procedures.

Just to be on the safe side, enter through Amsterdam. If you don't, you're facing the risk of being sent back to the UK, at your own expense.

I suppose so. Here's their contact details

Don't accept being referred back to VFS; as they state clearly in the disclaimer on their website, the answers they give to questions are not definitive, and cannot be relied on in case of a dispute. See that you get an answer in writing, saying that there will be no problem for you to enter Italy on the Schengen visa issued by the Dutch government.
