Niagara falls and The Horseshoe Falls (New York and Ontario border). There is a footbridge that crosses the falls, with a passport control office in the middle.

I need to know a bit more about your interests before giving any recommendatons. If you are a big city, historical kind of person then by all means Boston, Philly and DC. All prejudice aside DC is probably a must see just because you want to see things like the Capitol, White House etc.

But if you are more of an outdoors kind of person I'd steer you more towards New England and specifically the Maine coast.

A few other places to consider:

Newport, Rhode Islands--beautiful harbor area and lots of fancy victorian mansions to visit

Harpers Ferry, West Virginia--very historic and right near a beautiful part of the Potomac River

Shenandoah National Park--just beauty all around

Williamsburg, VA--which is still kept exactly like it was in the 1600s--including having actors wandering around and playing the roles of historical figures

Jamestown, VA--first English settlement

Daytona Beach--fun capital of Florida along with Orlando and south beach

Cape Canaveral space center--where they launch the Space Shuttles and other rockets

Hilton Head--famous golf resort on the South Carolina coast

Outer Banks--outer islands along North Carolina's coast

Charleston, South Carolina--full of character and a gorgeous city of old homes

Lancaster, Pennsylvania--to see the Amish who still go around in their old horse carts and refuse to use modern inventions

So many things to go see and do. I'll have to write them all down and research them all. Thanks heaps!

I think DC and Boston sound good. So does Rhode Island and Maine. I'd like to do a bit of both outdoor and indoor (museums, tours) kind of things.

Although my budget is pretty slim. So we'll have to see...

But I was think of finding my way around via AMTRAK...I heard its very good. Bit more Pricy but you get what you pay for i guess. :)

Anyway I leave in just under 2 weeks, so I better start reading up on some things.

Thanks heaps everyone.

If you do find yourself in DC send me a PM if you can, maybe we can hook up for lunch.

Interesting that Harper's Ferry has been mentioned. It's a little under an hour from my home and one of my favorite things to do is go bike riding and fishing along the canal. Here is a pic I took from the top of MD Heights last Feb. Damn that hike sure did get steeper as I got older!

As nice as it is to be honest if you are on a time schedule I'd say it's pretty far down the list of "must see" places in the east. But I"ve lived here my entire 50 years and would be happy to give you more info. If interested drop me a message.

Hey Dave,

I should be in DC. Well thats where my flight leaves...But I will definitely drop you a line when I arrive. See how that floats...

If possible give me a day or so notice. I live about an hours north but work maybe 40 minutes from downtown DC and if I can get some warning I can maybe arrange my workday to allow me to get down there. Do you fly in to DC? That would be better, no use me giving you tips as you are preparing to leave.

Besides I want to have lunch with a guy who talks with a funny accent. ;)

Hy Dave,

Yeah I have a flight out of Washington DC (Dulles) on the 13th Sept. But I'll be arriving a few days before that...probably about the 9th or 10th. But everything is still unplanned.
I'm just gonna catch a bus down from NYC or something like that.

But I will let you know a few days before I get to DC.
