That airport is a bit of a hike from Barcelona, 92km (57.5 miles) to be precise, so I would advocate getting there as early as possible.

Since flights from there only serve other EU destinations, check-in time will only be an hour before your flight is due to depart.

There's some info on bus lines operating to the airport on this Wikipedia site:
Buses operating in Girona Airport

Alternatively, if you think it's unsafe to travel by bus for any reason, then short of hiring a car, a taxi will be the only other means of getting there.

Sorry, I got the impression from your first post that you lived in Barcelona and wanted to get to the airport.

You could consider going to the city of Girona itself which is only 10km from the airport. It only takes 25 mins. Judging from the Wikipedia site, it looks to be an architecturally interesting city: Girona

Since Ryan Air started flying there, the airport has expanded rapidly, but it's still small scale compared with international hubs. Still, you should find passenger facilities like snackbars available I would have thought. Here's the airport's official page: Girona Airport

Are buses safe?

Yes.

Is staying in an airport all day / night interesting?

No.

Is Barcelona dangerous?

No.

Is Girona a pleasant place to spend the day?

Yes.

I would hang out in Girona for the day. Put you bags in left luggage at the train station or bus station and enjoy.

You really, really don't need to be at the airport more than an hour before the flight. And with these small airports, if you have checked in online before you can even do it in less than half an hour....(my record is 5 minutes before the flight left, but I don't recommend that).

Not every day, because of delays - but Girona is usually closed between about midnight and 04:00, so not too long to sit around.

One of the greatest bars in the whole of Europe (East and West) is "The Quiet Man". It's just off Las Ramblas in Barcelona.
Don't leave town without having a couple there.
