Your first port of call should be the Travelpoint guide to Thailand I think. Under the paragraph called "Regions" you'll find links to the southern islands and how to get there.
The Wikitravel site also contains comprehensive info on the subject: Wikitravel - Thailand
The travel guides are the best place to start, like the last poster said. Everywhere in Thailand is different so it really depends what kind of thing you like. On a personal note my favorite places in thailand are Pai, Chiang mai, and koh tao.
Traveling in thailand is easy it has a tourist infastructure like few other places in the world. Buses are your cheapest option there to travel but for long trips for trains are far more comfortable. Decide where you want to go and walk into one of the thousands of travel agents and tell them where you're headed. They will get you set up with all the tickets you need and let you know when to be where.
