My friend and I will be travelling and working from Cairns down to Sydney/Melbourne.
We are trying to find out the best mode of transport for us, and also the best value.
Has anyone else spent about 4 months in OZ and approx how much did they pay for transport?
We have looked at the bus passes available. No matter what, if we purchase a bus ticket (like the east coast discovery) we know we will have to make seperate journeys as most bus passes are in one direction only. I personally don't see how we will manage EVERY journey to be going south. We basically want to save as much as possible on travel.
Any help would be fantastic
I'm not qualified to give first hand advice. But I am looking to do a similar route with a friend and for us hiring a campervan seems to be the cheapest way to go. Were spending 6 weeks and may drive to Ayres rock as well. (long journey, but will be a road trip). Best to try and total up all the costs of doing it each way. For example, by bus you have the bus pass, other travel off the route, hostels e.t.c. With a campervan you have far more freedom to go where you want and the cost of renting seemed to work out cheaper than a bus pass and hostel costs.
Search for the rental company's and look under "relocations" I was looking the other day and Cairns is a spot they are trying to get their cars and campers back from. Only down side of this is they have time restrictions usually on the vehicles. but you can negotiate that and maybe combine a relocation vehicle with a rental with a bus ticket with hitching a ride etc.
When you get to Cairns there's always people either wanting to sell their vehicle or offering rides to share costs. Cairns even has two large public notice boards in the city that have postings on them.
backpackers vehicles can go for as cheap as $1000. Down side of that one is you'll have to sell it when you leave, but this is certainly the cheapest way and best way to get around.
