Im not there yet. I am in Rome at the moment but will be getting the ferry over to Split i think in a week or two. Unless you have any other ideas, suggestions on how to best get from Italy over and where to go.

Cheers Craig

When you get to Split, you'll be inundated by 'the little old lady brigade' offering rooms in their houses.
They're really cheap, almost always spotlessly clean and you also get great insight and helpful advice.
Actually they'll be visible in every town, village or island you arrive at. By the bus, train or ferry station.
Go and take a look at the room, if you don't like it or the price, you don't have to take it.
That's my advice.

There are also some good youth hostels around Croatia (not Split though), check their official website. Of course 'the little old lady brigade' works fine too, just make sure price and everything is agreed beforehand, as there have occasionally been stories about some of them trying to rip you off.. normally no problems though. Many cities also have tourist offices that can find you a rome in someone's house (usually a bit more expensive than if you find them yourself).

And some links for ferries to get there from Italy, or also to get around Croatia:

  • Jadrolinija, the ferry company that gets you to all the islands within Croatia, and a few lines to/from Italy (Ancona-Split, Ancona-Zadar, Bari-Dubrovnik). They have a good website with maps, schedules etc (make sure to check the schedule for the right dates, as they change much depending on seasons, also some smaller lines don't run every day of the week)
  • BlueLine (Ancona-Split)
  • VeneziaLines has catamaran services between Venice and some towns in northern Croatia, if you happen to go up there...

Have Fun!
