Can I take one of those rolling suitcases (already checked the dimensions) and a backpack as carry on items?

If your size and demisions are correct ( you can check it here http://www.ghptravel.com/htm/bagage/cabin.htm ) then there wouldn't be a big problem for your rolling suitecase.

I don't know about the backpack. If it's not to big then it could be called a "a male or female purse " and then it would be allowed.

I don't have experince with delta but normaly the big airlines have to much trouble as long as you don't over do it.

Greetings,
George

You are allowed 1 item and 1 personal item (briefcase / purse / laptop case). A backpack doesn't usually count as a personal item unless it is very small. So the answer is officially, no, you can't take both on.

If the flight isn't very full, they might let you take both on. Delta tends to be pretty strict, though.

What I would do is this - pack everything you want on the flight in the backpack. When checking in, don't check any bags and take both to the gate. (Assuming security lets you through with both - they have been known to turn people back and make them check a bag). If you make it to the gate, try and take both on. The worst that will happen is that they will make you check on at the gate. If that happens, check the roller bag.
