A car has ploughed into a crowd celebrating the Dutch Queen's Day Parade killing two and injuring several others. The clip on the BBC News report at Car ploughs into crowd shows the vehicle which is badly damaged continuing after colliding with people before hitting railings and coming to a halt.

Yeh saw that this morning while sipping my coffee. Couldn't believe how graphic some of the pictures where in the Sydney papers.....bodies lying all over the place and this guy's foot was facing the wrong way.

Made me go all queezy which isn't good at 8:55am!!

Did they find out if he meant them harm, or was just a crazy driver....

The death toll has since risen to five with five more critically injured, one of which is the driver of the vehicle.

He was apparently driving at full speed when the vehicle hit the rear of the crowd which sent bodies flying in all directions and explains the damage to the front of the vehicle.

His identity is known and he appears to be a 38 year old caucasian male of indigenous origin who worked as a security guard somewhere. Even if he does survive, we'll never know his true identity because criminals are given complete anonymity under Dutch law.

Latest news is that he has died in hospital. Apprently he confessed at crime scene that he did it on purpose, that it was an attack on the royal family

I can't say it surprises me. The clip showing his vehicle crashing into a monument was played back in slow motion in most of the media, but I've seen the original and the vehicle appears to have been travelling quite fast when it struck the railings surrounding the monument.

Most people die from injuries when the vehicle they were travelling in hits a lampost and I suppose this is no different.

I wonder how it will affect future Queen's Day events in the Netherlands. I can't see the Royal Family greeting the population from behind a bulletproof screen somehow.

EDIT BBC News has identified him as one Karst Tates. He probably missed the royal bus after ploughing into the crowd because he probably couldn't see where he was going. Looking at the picture in the BBC News report, you can just imagine the pace the vehicle must have been travelling at before it hit bystanders to have caused that much damage.

some more info: he lost his job. Which could have been an extra trigger for his action, combined with the fact that it was known that the visit of the royals costed €650.000. If you are in a certain state of mind this can be one of the reasons he did it.
He did plan things beforehand as well, as he had full details of where and when the royals would drive around in the big open bus. Suzuki vs Big Bus....I don't think anything would happened to the royals if that car hit that bus

Sometimes, full identiy is made public by the way, but normally only in rather unusual or very big cases. Joran van der Sloot, Volkert van der G, few more probably.

He seems to have been a pretty nondescript guy by all accounts, although the Media described him as "Autochtone" (which means "Indigenous" in English) which is an unnecessary label in my view. By all means describe somebody as a foreigner if you have to, but other labels have a habit of denigrating people I find. Maybe he took umbrage at that who knows.

His actions remind me a bit of the film "Taxi Driver" where Robert De Niro's initial target was a senator he didn't like. When he was spotted by the senator's security team, he changed tactics and killed some lowlife who were running a prostitution racket enslaving a very young prostitute played by Jodie Foster instead.

So having been turned away by the police the first time he tried to approach the main event, he switched tactics and chose instead to kill and maim as many ordinary people as possible by driving headlong into the crowd. Despicable whichever way you look at it. I still have the image of that young child in the clip in my mind who may have lost a parent in the crash.
