I just read about something on LonelyPlanet about these websites were you can rent rooms in someone's home.
Anyone tried on of these services? I was looking at istopover.com for a place in NY and wanted to know what other backpackers thought about this.
Thanks in advance!
Do you mean Homestays? I don't have any personal experience of them I'm afraid, but a good alternative is the Couchsurfing network which provides free accommodation to members worldwide. Their FAQ page explains how it all works.
It's a very popular way of getting a cheap bed, especially in Eastern Europe. At two of the big railway stations in Budapesta, (Keleti and Deli) there are people on the platforms advertising rooms with boards, just like you see them at airports with surnames on. I have used the services several times. The bed has been very simple - just a sofa and a quilt. That includes supper and breakfast. It's a nice way to find out a bit about the area too. I've done it in several capital cities and never had a problem. The cost is usually around €10-€15 a night.
These people operate at airports and coach stations too.
I can't comment on N.Y.'s facilities. When I've been there I've got a room cheap and easily.
Hope it works out.
