There are many hostels close to the ancient sites that charge around €15 a night. If you meet the unpaid workers on the excavating digs, they know of very cheap places too.
Please be careful of the rogue traders near the sites. They approach you, pretend to be interested in your travels - invite you for a drink then charge you €20 for a beer. It hasn't happened to me, only because I was warned well in advance. I was approached - but they got an ice cold shoulder.

Have a look at Couchsurfing which is the cheapest way to stay anywhere because it's free! You'll also meet some great people who will show you around. Read their FAQ page to see how it all works. ;)

Be very careful about Cuochsurfing. There are some horror stories to be seen at vaggablogging.net (then just search for couchsurfing nightmares).
Couchsurfing has never really won the vote of too many people that travel. Perhaps that's the way to get advice - from those who have tried it, rather than others who have looked a website or 2.

I think if there had been any real complaints, the individuals concerned would have been removed from the site. But you can always check a person's references before deciding to stay with them. The system works in a similar way to buying something on eBay. If the seller is running a scam, it will be noted in the customer satisfaction link.

You can always contact the site owners for clarification if you're unsure about something.

Hey there,
I recommend you not to stay in a hostel because hostels are located in a bad area (refugees, drugs, whorehouses). There are many decent 2 stars hotels for 30 euro per night. When you decide to book a hotel ask me about the location and i will tell you if its ok. Oh and something else, dont worry there isnt any rogue traders, it sounds quite funny to me especially when it is based on rumours but you have to know that Athens is an expencive city. Some clubs or bars have an entrance fee for 20 euro but most of them costs about 12 or 15. you could have one drink beer or alcohol. Its the same price...but if you order another beer will charge you 4-6 euro.
About the festival you said and events you could find some events at ticketpro.gr. Its not a promotion. There is the program for the summer.
