Cheap hostels in bangkok

Hi All,

I'm landing in bangkok on the 16th of september at 3pm local time and I'd like to pre-book a hostel to stay in for 3 nights...I've had a good look on-line and to be honest I can't tell much difference between them as they all look pretty good... So my question is, where's the best hostel to stay in bangkok? have you had an excellent experience in one and would like to recomend it to me? any help would be great.

I'm looking to pay around £10 at the most I think.

If you are real young you might want to get a place in the Khao San Road area. Slightly older or mature perhaps a hotel in the Sukhumvit or Siam area will work out better so you can use the Skytrain service.

Suk 11 Hostel is popular with some tourists. It is not far from the Nana Skytrain stop. Easy walk to street vendors, restaurants, bars, malls, bus service and travel agencies for tours or plane tickets.

Here is a link to a hotel popular hotel chain that has rooms in the Khao San Road area, Pattaya and Sukhumvit Road, Bangkok.
The Sawasdee Hotels have fan only rooms and rooms with air.

are you planing to spend 10 per night or in total? In total might would be a tight budget, but per night you'll defently find something nice.

Check a hostelbooking website and read some reviews. Sukhumvit Guesthouse is a really nice backpacker hostel and you can stay in a dorm for less than 5 EUR per night http://http://www.hostelbookers.com/hostels/thailand/bangkok/37204/

Take a nap is less a backpacker place and more quiet. I think it's one of the most pretty hostels you'll find in Thailand, very contemproray.

The names Thais give to their establishments sometimes is hilarious. I came across guesthouse on Nanai Road, Patong Beach called the Porn Guesthouse. Actually, "Porn" is a nickname Thais give to their daughters I believe which makes it even funnier.

Wouldn't surprise me if you found a hostel by that name too.

First off Id suggest not pre booking. As you say, from your online searches there are so many places so you wont have trouble finding anything, and your arriving at a perfect time of day to give you plenty of time to check a few places out in person. Its quite normal to ask to see a room before hand and no one will be annoyed at you if you decide the place isnt for you. Even if you do like it, its always worth a try at looking like you don't like it and your going to move on, that's your first step in negotiating the price!

As far as a recommendation. Most people go to Khao San Rd., and for that reason Khao San has become a bit of a freak show and over priced. Worth checking out, but don't shop or stay there. I suggest asking your taxi from the Airport to drop you at the top of Khao San. From there walk the two blocks over to Soi Ram Buttri. This alley way is awesome, it has cheap and expensive hotels. If you want really cheap walk down Soi Ram Buttri and take one of the even smaller alleys out onto Phra Athit. There are places here with shared bath and no AC for 150bt

I liked the Soi Rambuttri area as there's loads going on but it's quieter that Khao San Road. I stayed at one place called My House and another called Bella Bella - both were fine. I paid around 500Baht for a double room with ensuite (that was around 3 years ago though).
