Hey

I'm arriving in Australia in September, doing it alone.

I want to find somewhere in Sydney where i can pre-book my first week so I will have somewhere to go straight away and be able to ease myself in and get my feel for the city.

Are there any hostels that other members would recommend me booking?

You could try using the Budget Accommodation tool on this site. To reach it, click the Travellerspoint logo button (above "Forums") and then you'll find it about halfway down the page on the right.

Mark. Arriving in September is low season, so you shouldnt have too much trouble finding a place. I understand you wanting to have a place set up, but maybe only book the first two nights and see how you like it. I stayed at the Blue Parrot in Kings Cross. Its small, family run place, and Kings Cross is an interesting walk into downtown.

[ Edit: Sorry, a little over the top. ]

I stayed at Base in Central Sydney and it was great - very central, clean and there are a couple of good communal areas.

You can find that same list of Sydney hostels here on TP, and we're the only site in the world that gives you the option of social bookings when booking here ;)

HeyMark, the question depends somewhat on budget too as different parts of Sydney are pretty different in price. Wake Up and YHA at Central station are both quite expensive. I've stayed at both and they're both well recommended, but yes, highest end of the price scale in terms of hostels. They're very central though so great for a first week when you explore different parts of the city and find out more about which parts you prefer most. I know a few members here have stayed at the YHA in Glebe and really enjoyed it (it's got a more homey feel than the Central YHA and Wake up). Base, that bex76 mentions, is right off Darling harbour and also popular.

Hope that helps!

By the way, I can highly recommend Coogee for a few days/nights. Ah, I miss those good ol' days living there...

Stayed in WakeUp Sydney for a week and loved it. Nice and clean, great side bar and just nice people. One of the best so far! :)

Hi, I stayed at Railway Sqaure YHA for 4 months...long story. It's from my point of view, it's the best party hostel, and loads of people to talk to. I stayed at Glebe for a week, it was alright, but the TV room closes at 10 I think.

I didn't really know anyone for about 3 weeks, but once i did the party never stopped.

I'm back off on my travels in October, back to Australia, then off to New Zealand.

Glebe YHA if you like good company and a decent sleep. Go into the city if you are a partyhead.
