The typical pilgrim's route is in India and Nepal, where Buddhism originated. Some places are Sunauli (on the Nepali border), Buddha's birth place, the deer park in Sarnath off Varanasi in India where Buddha preached his first sermon, his death in Kushinagar, and where he gained enlightenment under a bodhi tree in Bodhgaya (all in India).

The budget you're looking at is around 20 USD a day in India if you live like a conventional budget traveller (cheap guesthouses, public transport...), and about 25 to 30 dollars in Nepal. 30 in India would allow you to live quite comfortably, and probably 40 (living comfortably) for Nepal especially if you go during the peak season and stick to tourist traps like Thamel (which is becoming quite expensive...)
