I wanted to know if it is still really bad traveling from Vientiane to Hanoi? From what i've researched the bus trip is pretty much a nightmare? is this still true? I have a 12 year old with me and i dont envy being on hairpin corners with my kid sick all the way
i looked into flying but i found it quite expensive? am i reading it right? any help will be appreciated
As far as I know it's still a bad journey with regular breakdowns and delays and can take from 18- 36 hours depending on what goes wrong! I flew with Vietnam Airlines and it cost roughly $100 - well worth it by the sound of things. I'd recommend flying, especially as you have a child with you. The flight only takes an hour.

I second Bex's advice, only heard nightmare stories about the bus journey and I also flew from Vientiane to Hanoi with Vietnam Airlines. Cost me around $ 90 and I only booked it a few days before in their Luang Prabang Office. That seemed much cheaper than booking at a travel agent.
have to agree, bus travel would not be recommended. Would opt for the flight if I were you
I had the same choice a few years ago, I chose to fly with Laos Air, $100 sounds about right, I arrived in Hanoi in a few hours, some travelling buddieds decided to take the bus and it took 38 hours, bus broke down, some of the roads were nearly impasable etc one of my better decisions!
good luck, Hanoi's amazing, North Vietnam was one of my highlights
thanks for your advice everyone.
any other do's & dont's would be appreciated about traveling any place in SEA. this would be very helpful. Things to avoid like the bus trip would be my main point of question.
