Come On Down [or UP.] I have been here since 4/1 and the world is improving. Many places getting more customers and we have lots to do and see. The dangers from flu are low in the tropics this time of the year. Worse elsewhere. So, go ahead with your plans and view the US news with skepticism please.
Hello all ~~ this seems like a great thread for my first post on TravellersPoint.
Drav, your trip is going to be rich and rewarding. The comments from the other posters in Mexico are pretty accurate. At first there was lots of media attention and alarm, but now things are returning to normal. At present, people are having their temperatures checked at the airport -- don't know how long that will last.
You didn't say how long your vacation is, but absolutely keep in mind that Mexico has a fabulous bus system. Judicious checking in a guidebook will allow you to hopscotch between points of interest for you. Just check the travel times between destinations closely. This is a mountainous country, so a trip of 200 kilometers, for instance, may take much longer than you'd imagine. Once in a town, there are always many very cheap forms of transportation to allow you to get around quite freely.
I live outside of Oaxaca, and despite the annual teachers' strike downtown was lively and I saw tourists.
So, relax and get ready to have a wonderful time in this extremely interesting country.
