Has anyone stayed or know of any good cheap hostels/resorts/huts on Thailands best beaches?
We are staying on PhiPhi first. Then probably head to Aonang and then LOTS of other islands. Has anyone got any good advice about when and where you get the cheapest deals. Is it cheaper to walk in and book? Any where we can look that not everyone knows about?
Any advice would be great as we are on a vvvvv tight budget.
Price depends on when your going. Its seasonal so prices fluctuate dramatically. When you get off the ferry, every tout on the island will be waiting to greet you, and hang on you, and badger you to go with them. You'll be told every story in the book as to why you should do this. But ignore them, they are on commission and you're completely at their mercy.
Ok from the ferry, turn right and head down the path into the main part of the town. If your lucky the guy at the first scuba place will be handing out his free maps. The further away from the main part of town here, the cheaper the places get. If you go all the way to the base of the hill you find the gems. Lux Hotel was nice for 300b and just before that is Hillside Guest House. Nop the owner is the most amazingly nicest guy you could ever meet. also 300b. The good thing about being out at the base of the hill, is you can walk the 5 million steps, ok maybe not that many, to the top for the best view in Phi Phi.
There's sort of one main street that takes you through town, but its a little confusing at first, so small you can't get lost for long, so just explore. Try to find Spidermonkey Travel. They are on this main street, its a travel agent owner by an English girl, she and her crew WILL give you the most honest advice for further travel. they actually showed me what their commission was. But even with them, they know the deal. In Asia you negotiate everything, so don't shy away from trying to negotiate a better price. Believe me you'll come home and go to the movies and when they ask for your money, you'll be like, "um special price for me?"

Oh and if you go to Koa Tao, The Moonlight Guest house is awesome. Although that's subjective. I loved walking the insanely steep road up to the guest house, that required I jump in the shower every time I got home. But the view from the restaurant is awesome in the evening. I think I paid 150b here, but that's because not many wanted to make that climb and the place was a bit run down, but in a really charming way, like the plants growing over the shower wall!

On Phi Phi I stayed at the Rock Backpackers Hostel. It has dorms and private rooms and was cheap. I was there before the tsunami but I have heard that it is still up and running. You cant miss the place if you walk towards the steps for the viewpoint as it is on the way and it is a big ship in the trees! Sounds weird but you will see what I mean when you see it. It is also a great restaurant where you can sit in the boat and watch the world go by.
