Hi Lil J.
Isn't sweet how everybody wants to help you out and give you tips? Well, that's exactly what will happen to you when you travel solo. People (the majority of them) are friendly and always willing to help a solo-traveler. Why don't you go on a short and cheap little trip first (for instance to Amsterdam for a long weekend) and see how you like the experience. My two top tips for solo-travelers:
1. Stay at a youth hostel and meet tons of other travelers, this is a great way to make new friends to discover your new destination with.
2. My more radical tip, but the best way to find out about your new destination...look around for someone (alone or a group) who looks like "your type of person" and tell them that they look like the kind of person who would know about all the cool places to go (people love these kinds of compliments) & ask them to tell you where to find the best shops, the best clubs, etc. They may simply give you some tips or even invite you to come along to where ever they were going. I have ended up in many exclusive clubs, bars and parties that I would have never found otherwise in this way. I have never had a bad experience with this (always trust your gut instinct though)
Now, with tip number one, you'll see your destination through the eyes of travelers and with tip number two you might end up seeing it through the eyes of the locals. Good luck!
hey there simangel, it is great how everyone wants to help yeh, and thanks very much for your advice-thats a great way of looking at it i suppose! i'm in a hypa mood today and was just thinking about travelling alone and i'm all excitied! well actually i'm always thinking about travelling and i think i will just go for a week away first and see how i like it, the problem is that i just dont know where!
australia appeals to me, i cant really think of anywhere else but then i know nothing about any other country-well not even australia. its a tough decision.
Lil j (love the name by the way),
I think you're in the UK right? Why not take a short trip to Europe (say a week or thereabouts) and see how you find it by yourself; get your confidence up perhaps?
Alternatively you could come down to Oz, but at the same time have some sort of group travel/tour thing planned so that you are with a group of people for some of the time at least. You could hang out by yourself at first, then do a tour, then hang out by yourself afterwards. Actually, you might meet some people on the tour that you can meet up with or travel with later.
There are definitely some drawbacks on travelling alone, but on the plus side you are free to go where you want when you want, with no arguing or compromising with your travel companions.
One thing you might consider in deciding whether to stay in Europe, go to America, or go to OZ or NZ relates to the exchange rate.
I'm from the US, and since I travel a lot, I know the euro is worth more here than ever before 1 euro = $1.30 American. I remember it was only a few years ago when 1 euro = $.85 American. It's better for you, but worse for me going to Europe (but I'll still go).
Anyway, the point I'm making is that America is quite a bit cheaper than it has been in the past for this reason.
Hi again Lil J!
If you definitely wanna go solo and its your first time - go somewhere not to far away and for a short time (e.g. a week as you suggested). Check out Ryanair , Easyjet etc for cheap flights to somewhere in Europe . E.g. Sweden, Finland, Holland, Denmark - i dont know where you'd like just go and find out for yourself!
I had a fab time - it has boosted my self-confidence, ive even got to know some great places in other countries. More importantly you get some knowledge you can share with fellow travellers about the good and the 'bad' times of travelling.
have you no bros of sisters who would go along with you?? I have three bros but none of them would come wiv me to norway so i made up my mind if they dont wanna come tuff! im going anyway! my dad wasnt happy bout me going on my own but sure im home safe and well again!
Wot about France, or Switzerland ?? It really depends on wot your hobbies/interests are (not always) but helps if youve got something in mind in these countries you may wanna see. e.g. history, music.
Come back to me if you want help in any way ! i'l try to help you along!
i dont think you should ever come home early! people always get homesick but you should stay and have lots of fun!
hey james-again, he! he! well if you met me you would understand the name-i think most would say it suites me quite well!!!

yeh i'm in the uk, yeh the group travel thing seems good-i have been looking into that, so least i wont be totally alone but at the same time can go off alone!-i suppose thats the better option really.
