I will be going over to Croatia on the 17th May 09 and am looking for island hopping tours to go on but can not find any companies that are offering. I am traveling round europe solo, am on a budget and will be arriving in Split, is there any companies or any advice anyone can give me for the islands and Split?
Firstly, I wish I was going to Croatia on the 17th too...
If you want to see the islands of Croatia you don't need to go on any tours, I promise. In fact if you were on a tour you'd spend your time wishing you were somewhere else.
The best way to see the islands is on your own or with another traveller you meet up with and has the same sort of ideas as you do. If an island catches your imagination and there's a ferry leaving (they're really cheap) just hop on the ferry, and as I mentioned in one of your other posts, you won't have a problem finding nice accommodation.
Croatia is a safe country to travel in I've always found, that sort of freedom means you can go where you want when you want.
Split is my least favourite place to visit in Croatia, but, having said that, it's nice to spend a little time there and look around the old Roman ruins, have a nice seafood pizza on the seafront, maybe catch a band somewhere...
Then I'd take the ferry to the island of Hvar. I stay with a couple called Luki and Ines when I'm there (www.house-zakaria.com), it's friendly and you get to meet lots of other travellers. Fell free to tell him that Brendan from Ireland recommended the place.
If you have any specific questions you can PM me directly. Most of all I'd say to you that Croatia is a country where you'll end up going in a direction you'd never intended, just because you liked the look of it.... JUST DO IT AND ENJOY!
There is no need to book anything - if you're planning to get into Dubrovnik. All along the roadside harbour are boats doing day trips and stopovers to just about every island off Croatia. The "Just turn up" deals are excellent - and very cheap.
