Overnight one and a half hours north of Bordeaux France

Need to stay overnight approximately one and a half hours from Bordeaux airport, we are considering Cognac or Saintes, which would you recommend or is their somewherebetter, we will have late afternoon and the evening to explore the town any help would be appreciated.

...I prefer Cognac but Saintes is also nice...
