I never done it myself, but I'd be very surprised if there weren't a direct bus service on this route. There definitely won't be a train: I can tell you that much.

As to time: you're looking at something close to a 1,000 kilometres. Count on it taking 24 hours at least. Probably more.

A word on safety: you may want to check the situation in the Ecuadorian-Bolivian border area before leaving. There used to be some conflict between the two countries not too long ago, and if there still is, you may want to go flying instead, if only to avoid ending up in a road block.

I'm not sure if there is a bus that would take you from Bogota to the border in one trip, it would take a long time. There definately sint a train as already pointed out. I would advise you to do this trip over 2 days using overland bus companies. Bogota to Cali (11 hours), Cali to the Ecuador border the same, then on to Quito.

I am currently in Bogota and there is a direct line that goes from Bogota to Quito. I am actually searching for more information on it right now, but will probably have to figure it out at the terminal tomorrow. It takes 30 hours according to the information I have found.

It is supposed to be more expensive to take the direct route, as buses in Ecuador are very cheap. If I can find some more info, I will get back to you with it, or my experience when I arrive in Quito. I would expect to pay about $75 US though.

30 hours on a bus watching 'Taken' with Liam Neeson... wow that just killed like a 1000 brain cells just thinking about it. I hope the aircon works.

Ok, so the adventure is over. Couldnt find a direct bus, but it isnt really necessary. Pretty easy all around.

Bogota to border - You are looking at about 20 hours to Pasto from Quito, where we switched buses, and another 3 or so to Ipiales which is right on the border. Cost - 88k pesos or about $40 USD

Taxi from Ipiales to border - 5 minutes - 7k pesos or $3.50

You can change money at either side and I got a pretty solid rate for USD of 2200 to 1. Border can take up to an hour. No visa fees for US.

Taxi from border to bus - wasnt really a terminal, but they drop you right next to the buses for Quito - $1.50

Bus to Quito - about 4 hours and there are two terminals in Quito, so good idea to have an idea where you want to stay - $4.50

Taxi to hostel - $1.50

All told, it was about 31 hours door to door. I accidentally left my camera on the bus when we switched in Pasto and like an idiot, waited an hour while they supposedly tried to find it. Of course it wasnt there. It really was a miserable ride all around. But what can you do? Planes are about 3 times more at least, if not more. Total price was $55 to bus. Planes were running around $250 at the time.

Good luck! Hope the info helps.
