Hello,

Does anyone know of a bank account that can be used without charges for overseas transactions? I am going to Australia in July for a year and don't really want to be wasting money on charges all the time. It makes me look like this

Thanks,

Emma

hi there
as far as i know you will get charged for using your bank in oz, if you are going for a year why not open an australian bank account? have you booked your visa already? i booked my visa with ozconnect.ie and they opened an account for me for a small charge, you could also open an account online with the westpack bank (who i opened my account with) now that i think of it they have a branch in london aswell. good luck

Once you arrive in Oz you have either 4 or 6 weeks, I can't remember which, to open a bank account hassel free. You just need the usual ID's & an address, if you have your TFN then even better. However, choose your branch carefully, other banks will charge you to use their ATMS so go with one of the bigger institutions that have branches all over Australia so you don't get stung with the charges - Commonwealth, ANZ etc.
Good luck with it all ;)

Positive, I got back from 4 months in South America in March this year and it's all I used - didn't get charged a bean!!

I used the Flex account and it was free to withdraw abroad but I believe they are going to charge soon, well I get a letter through the post saying they will be anyway.

Not fair!

ah ok, well going by what Taylor said, it must be this July that they are stopping that little freebie.

Some premium accounts like the HSBC PLUS don't have withdrawal charges. But there are fees for these accounts though. The fee for HSBC PLUS is £12.95/month.
