I'm planning to go to central and south america next October (need to save first!). I've never been travelling on my own or even outside of europe! What do you reckon start from the bottom up or vice versa? I want to avoid trouble with men (which I find hard even in this country), tips on getting from central to south - is it really that hard? And hard and fast websites on volunteering opportunities across latin america that don't cost anything (apart from accomodation and the like). I'd also like to try my hand at a bit of English teaching - whats it like to get a visa?

Look forward to hearing from all you travelling peps!

Generally speaking in South America you can get a 3 month tourist visa on entering the country (if you are from Europe) and these visas are extendible by another 3 months. Countries like Brasil have limits: You can only spend 6 months in any 12 month period in the country on tourist visas.

I found a great volunteering opportunity down in Bolivia working at an animal rescue place. I hope to be down there in March, but its the cheapest volunteering i've found, and looks cool. Here's the link:

good luck in your travels..i can't wait for mine!
