Here's my short list:

Do's
1. Do keep an eye on your money; make sure you budget wisely and keep your cash/cards safe
2. Do eat healthily and take a multi-vitamin now and then (I'm no health freak, but a lot of booze and tourist food can run you down).
3. Do write a short travel journal; great to read when you get back home.
4. Do take a pair of earplugs
5. Do take some music with you.
6. Do keep an open mind!

Don't
1. Don't expect the comforts and cleanliness of home.
2. Don't waste all your time in internet cafes
3. Don't worry if some plans fall through; you will have a ball anyway.
4. Don't overpack; you will need less clothes than you think.
5. Don't take risks with drugs or similar stuff.
That's all!

Hi Jordy,

I've never travelled for more than a month at a time, but here's what I've learned:

DO (to underline what James said) watch your money, and your stuff. Seriously, make it an obsession. I make sure I can touch every bag I have when I travel - straps hooked around my feet in the metro, bag stuck against my chest, anything.

DO let yourself go and adapt to wherever you are. Sometimes it's hard to let go of our "home habits", and you end up a little peeved that you can't get French Toast for breakfast in Paris or real, bona-fide Ketchup (as opposed to 'tomato sauce') down under (OK, well, maybe that's just me...)

DON'T forget how much you've spent. That only happened to me on one trip - plus the exchange was horrible, which didn't help - and I almost had a bird when I got my credit card bill. Little things add up! Holy moley!
