I'll be heading on an RTW as well in Dec 2009.

Around the world trips, if booking with set dates can be perceived as complex by travel agents here in the states, when in fact: they are quite simple to do yourself with an open-ended RTW ticket.

The advantage of a travel agent is that they will offer to itinerary and travel advice/visa booking: information that you can either easily find yourself or learn along the way at any rate - all the while: charging consultation fees to do so.

Why not go INDIE for your trip? After all: nobody knows what you want to do more than you. - Besides, traveling is quite simple, and even with the occasional hiccup here and there - its all part of the experience, and, if you've the time and wield the mighty RTW ticket: the freedom is unparalleled as you can stay as long or as short as you like at any destination within the 12 month period your ticket is valid.

For info on RTW tickets, check out: http://wikitravel.org/en/Round_the_world_flights

The whole process is simple, and fun:

- Find out where you want to go and what you want to do - compile the list
- Research specific activities and itineraries for each country you want to visit using resources: online, travel books, dreams etc.
-Cross reference this information to the requirements/resitrictions offered by your chosen RTW ticket carrier
- Kosher your plans through people on the forums at this website: http://www.flyertalk.com/
- Consider booking a round trip ticket from a country of origin where RTW tickets are cheaper (such as the UK, Australia) - As the U.S. is extremely expensive to book an RTW from .... You WILL profit from the difference. - Check out http://www.studentuniverse.com and kayak.com to book the round trip ticket.
