Well thank you for all the advice. We will definitely go and visit Los Cayos. And try to get to all the places you also recommended it.

DO NOT SKIP CENTRAL AMERICA AND ESPECIALLY NOT GUATEMALA. antigua is beautiful city, and tikal is AMAZING! ho far south you were planning to go but if you can make it definitely go to torres del paine in the southern part of chile/argentina. amazing landscapes if you google it i promise the pictures do not do it justice.

We spent 2 weeks in the Yucatan/Belize/and Guatemala.

Agree with piecar that Tikal is a must - absolutely loved it there.

In Belize we went out to Caye Caulker and that was good. The girlfriend is an open water diver and did some good dives including the Blue Hole.

I just came back from 4 months of backpacking around Mexico/Central America. I started in Mexico then Guatemala, Honduras, El Salvador, Nicaragua, Costa Rica & Panama.

In Guatemala: Flores/Tikal was great, Antigua was nice but a bit pricy. San Pedro @ lake Atitlan was very nice, got sucked into the vibe and ended up staying for 3 weeks, it's the town no one leaves.

El Salvador: Like this one the most, the people are great. They don't get as many tourists so they haven't learned to not like us. Definitely get to El Tunco if you like surfing.

Honduras: Did Utila, a great place it is one of those places you stay in longer than you planned

Nicaragua: Went to Leon, Granada, San Juan Del Sur - all great places.

Costa Rica: Went to La Fortuna, Puerto Viejo, San Jose (unless you are shopping or transferring buses not really a place you want to go). On a previous trip I did Manual Antonio which is also very beautiful. Had some backpacking buddies on this trip go to Tamarindo aka Tamagringo, they said to give it a pass. Some other buddies went to Monteverde, they said it was great, hard to get to and a little pricy but very much worth the trip.

Panama: Just got to Bocas Del Toro, nice place but you pay for everything as you need to take boats to the good beaches etc. Some friends made it to San blas Islands they said it was worth the trip.

I kept a blog going while I was on the road. All of the pricing is current so rather than re-write

Hope it gives you some ideas :)
