Hi Josh,

Where in Malaysia are you leaving for Thailand? I will assume that you're leaving from KL.

If you're in a hurry, getting on a bus would be faster, plus there are more trips in a day than the train for you to get there.

But I would suggest you to take a train and enjoy the ride instead, if you're not in a tight schedule. Take the express train for a faster journey, as it only stops in major cities. Once you're at the Malaysia-Thailand border, you will have to switch to Thai train from there. More info on the train at

Preferably, take a ride on weekdays (whether it's train or bus) because the Malays and Indians communities are leaving the cities for their hometowns (better known locally as "balik kampung") to celebrate the Deepavali (11 Nov) and Eid-il-fitri (14 Nov) festivals.

Let me know if you need more info.

This site suggests route f by train from Singapore - Kuala Lumpur - Penang – Bangkok. As you're traveling from Kuala Lumpur (Sentral), go down to beginning the plan from that spot.

If you are going from KL, I suggest the bus , its RM35 from KL to Hat Yai and takes about 8 hours. There are morning and evening buses. The train is much more expensive and is really slow and limited in departure time.
From Hat Yai it is easy to get a bus or minivan to Phuket.

The other option from KL is to try and get a cheap flight with AirAsia
