I'm going to be traveling with 3 friends during December '09. When Christmas rolls around we will be some where between Kangaroo Island and Sydney, probably in Melbourne. I was wondering if there is anything we shouldn't miss for the holiday, or a better option close by. Any ideas???

If you're into parties and there's a way you can make it to Sydney by Christmas, I highly recommend going to the Sunburnt Christmas party at Bondi Beach. I was there last Christmas and it was actually the best Christmas I've ever had. I wouldn't tell my family that and hurt their feelings though. But really, how often do you get to party at the beach on Christmas?

If you think you'll be in Melbourne, you might want to check to see if one of the beaches there has a similar party, if you're into that kind of thing.

PS--I wanted to clarify about the party because someone else mentioned it on another thread. The party is actually at Bondi Pavilion and you have to pay admission and get a bracelet to get in. There is a balcony that overlooks the beach and you can go in and out if you want to go to the beach and come back. However, no alcohol is permitted on the beach itself. The area is heavily paroled by cops to enforce this policy on Christmas.

Head to Sydney at least for New Years Eve (keep in mind most accommodation has a minimum 7 nights + stay around that time in Sydney). New Years Eve in Sydney really goes off like very few places in the world. I've been the last 3 years and will be heading there again this new years eve. You don't want to leave it too long before booking the NYE accommodation because half the places would already be booked out. I booked mine back in January to avoid paying many hundreds of dollars a night.

We will be in Sydney for New Years. I should be staying at Harbour City Backpackers from the 29th-2nd with my three friends I'm traveling with. What about you, any solid plans yet, it is getting really tough to find hostel for New Year

I'm also going to be in Sydney for Christmas and New Years, I reallyh struggled last week to get accomodation! Finally managed to get into Base, if anybody has ever stopped there?

As the others have said I've been highly advised to spend the Christmas and New Years period in Sydney!

I've stayed at Base in Sydney, really friendly place and great facilities. there is a bar attached to the Hostel which was always busy and had some sort of party on. Im sure at New Year though everywhere will be like that.

Im going to be in Oz for Xmas and New Year also and thinking about Base for my stay also.

Good choice!

Am planning on arriving in Oz round the 20th of Dec but am having a tough time finding accomodation, sure there are plenty of places, but they are charging £99 a night over this period!! Any suggestion? Will be staying for a few months so could I maybe arrange a long term thing some where?
