Hi Saarafin,

I would say no to taking the Laptop.

The cons way outweigh the pros when you think about all the extra nuicances it causes. You will have to pay more for travel insurace, extra bulky luggage, something else to worry about getting stolen.

There are internet cafes on every second corner. Do you really need your laptop for work etc or can you get away with contacting your family etc at internet cafes?

Depends what sort of laptop you plan on taking. A large, heavy, expensive laptop is going to cause more problems. Wheras a small 10" lightweight notebook, will only be the size of a large book and not weigh much more. Also some of these can be picked up for a couple of hundred quid.

How long will you be in Oz? If it's only a few weeks to a month, you probably don't want to bother with it, but if you're staying a few months to a year, it's definitely something to consider.

I went to Australia on a working holiday and brought my laptop with me, against the advice of many people. I'm so glad I did. True, it's not hard to find Internet cafes and most hostels offer computers with Internet access--but you have to pay for it and you often have to wait to even get a computer.

One thing that's great about having a laptop is that you can often find free wi-fi so you don't always have to pay for Internet. You can work offline whenever you feel like it--resumes, e-mails, blogs, etc. and not have to pay for every second that you're at the computer.

Another great reason for having a laptop is that you can use it as your personal entertainment center and watch movies, etc. whenever you feel like it. Since you're going to be without your own TV for a long time, this is something to consider. I was so happy to be able to watch movies on my own and not be stuck to whatever was on the hostel TV.

But it will all depend on your situation. As someone else pointed out, you do need to take extra precautions to make sure that it's not stolen and it will add some extra weight to your bag. I recently wrote an article on this subject at so that may be helpful when you're making your decision.
