July vs December/January for a trip down under?!

Travel Forums Australia / New Zealand & The Pacific July vs December/January for a trip down under?!

HELP! I'm looking to head to Australia for the first time and am torn between a late July trip (16th-30th) or a Decemeber/Jan trip (Dec 30-Jan 14).

I'm looking to go from Sydney to Cairns and love warm weather. I know that July is 'winter' but does that mean that I can't do beach time in Cairns? I've heard fabulous things about sailing trips in Whitsundays.

I'm nervous about January since I've heard that's rainy season and would be bummed if my trip were rainy the whole time. (it's more expensive too...)

Any advice? I'm clueless and am going on a whim here- never travelled internationally and will be travelling by myself. Any thoughts/advice/ pearls of wisdom would be greatly appreciated!

Much thanks!

hi kathrine
july is peak season from whitsundays up to cairns but in january it is wet season not a good idea.
As alot of the boats do get cancelled in jan on the whitsundays.
cheers stu:)

In July it's going to be cold in Sydney and quite pleasant from Brisbane up to Cairns so if you're keen on the Brisbane to Cairns leg of the trip then this is the time to go. In December it'll be warm in Sydney and monsoonal from Brisbane up to Cairns so if you're more keen on the Sydney to Brisbane leg of the trip then this is the time to go.

As Stu said July is generally the peak time for the Whitsundays to Cairns, but this might not be a bad thing because you'll meet heaps of people and tour operators will be out in force so you'll have heaps of choice. I did this trip in May-June 2007 and found the weather great, you can check my trip photos.

Good luck!

Thanks so much! :) I think I'll plan on going now, because I'm really more interested in the Brisbane- Cairns portion!

I'm looking to go Greyhound or Oz Experience... any thoughts/recommendations?!

If you just want to get between places then Greyhound is fine. If you want to be in an 18-25 yr old party crowd then Oz Experience!
