There are definitely a lost of options to chose from, depending on what you're looking for. The West coast(British Columbia) is lovely, and Alberta has a lot to offer in terms of outdoor sports(kayaking, sking, etc). Ontario has some of the touristy stuff, like the CN tower in Toronto and Niagara Falls. Montreal and Quebec City, Quebec have a lot of beautiful historical buildings. The East Coast also has a lot of history and natural beauty, very close together.

Luckily, the cost of living in Canada is not too bad. Many of the prices are similar between England and Canada, but the GBD is much better than the CAD.

Some suggestions:
Halifax
Toronto
Ottawa
Calgary
Lake Louise
Victoria
Banff
Niagara Falls(cheesy, but the Falls are worth it)

Strooth.... A year in the Big C. I could write a 500 page book about the trips I've had there (I'm in Manchester - incidentally) and I've never done a year non-stop. You got driving licences??
