Quoting Swept Away

travellers that are fishing for that "You are so intelligent" compliment from other travellers.

Hmmm...believe it or not but I somehow understand your frustration. I think most people are insecure when meeting new people (including myself) and some people have the tendency to cover this up by telling you everything they know. And yes, that is freaking annoying and also very boring. I also fall asleep when this happens and I feel like just walking away (the people you speak about would probably not even notice that you walked away). If you want a succesfull conversation, I have learned, you need to find similar interests by asking questions instead of just telling your entire life story. By asking questions you can actually have great conversations, atleast it works for me.

To which thread will you be jumping now? You can react on thousands of threads here on TP. If you don't want a serious thread you go to a funny thread or a travel-related thread. Don't bore us or yourself by reacting on your own comments;)

Hello all
could not help myself from posting something on this threat.
We've got to agree, these kind of "brainy people" are found everywhere and they can be annoying. Not because their knowledge, but because they love to hear themselves talking. Specially when someone does not participate in the conversation (the dumb one), that is like fuel for them to keep on going and show off all the've got. Lame.

I myself consider me to be a well-educated fella, who has travel a lot, and is always curious about everything. I inform myself before going places and investigate when a topic interest me. However i do not like to start a conversation and keep on going when i notice the other party is not interested, its just absurd, but indeed you will always come across these kind of people who won't shut up.

The worst i had was with a guy i met in Shanghai, we started a conversation about the early westernization of russia and its repercution in art. God that was annoying, when he noticed he was wrong and i was actually right, he could not stand it and pulled out an statement like: "do not contradict me ok, i know what im talking about, i studied, i know better" i was like what the ..! I left the conversation inmediately. Retarded...

But i do not regret it, i mean if we do not strike up a conversation at all, we might miss a lot of wonderful people with interesting stories to tell who are willing to listen and share those.

That makes any trip worth the while!

Cheers

Swept Away, if you hate every aspect of travelling so much, why do you bother? I've yet to read one nice thing you have to say about a place or a people. It seems like a gigantic waste of time and money for you to leave home. Why would you endure a conversation you don't like? Just get up and leave politely.

Honestly, I think you love all this misery.

Let's all calm down shall we...crikey....as a newbie to this forum I have to say some of you guys scare the persqueeters out of me.....Live and let live, life's too short?!

  • Gets coat and sneaks out*

Hope you are not too alarmed by this thread. :) There is a quite a lot of history behind Swept Away's posts which has led to all this.

Uhm, its a new thread and its not about me... I am sure Gixer, don't even care about who wrote it. My profile is empty and I don't have photos... It was just a thought and some people don't come here everyday, and react to a post like its a series.

Its just a thread... and like I said 99% of the people here are nice.

Except it is all about you.

"I am back to..."
"I'm just not very good at..."
"I guess I didn't..."
"I left coz..." (Now there's great use of that ESL.)

There are at least 18 references to yourself and actually quite a few more than that. But, it's not a thread about you.

Gixer: I also sent you a PM saying the same thing as bex said, if slightly more elaborately. See the "1 New Message" link way at the top of the screen when you're logged in. (The message shows up as "unread" for me, which makes me think you haven't seen it yet. If you have, but simply read it through email, I guess this is superfluous.) :)

Oh I'm sorry. I'll TONE it down... I'm sure people who read this thread would know that I am bad boy... no need to Justify stuff and explain and be defensive... People can make their own judgements, no need to JUSTIFY our post.

Lastly, if you want to kill a blogger, uhm, ignore his post!

You're not blogging. And, so you know - yes, I moved the thread for all the reasons Sander gave in his post that you have chosen to ignore.

That reminds me of an incident that happened to me many years ago. I am a drummer, I've been doing it for 25 years and for many years doing it professionally and one day I was talking to a guitarist about using brushes or drum sticks and about how important fluxuations in levels etc can be. He wasn't agreeing with me and he came out with the most embarrassing quote I have ever heard, he said "you cant tell me anything about drumming, I know what I am talkng about because I did a module on rhythms in my music degree course!" What a tw*t!!!

Ive never done Asia or Australasia, but plenty of North America, much of Africa (North and South) and nearly every country in Europe on both sides.
I met a guy on a train awhile back, while travelling through Serbia on my way to Athens - and he told me I hadn't party'd till I'd been to Rosy O'Grady's in Benidorm. I didn't wanna lower his intelligence any further by telling him that I've done all nighters in the Zambia Outback and got wrecked with Transylvanian Gypsies and that when I was in Benidorm (ugh!!) it was a job to walk in a straight line along the pavements - when sober, while trying to avoid - or step over the multiple piles of puke.
What did you call that so called drummer?? My sentiments about this bloke entirely.

Hm. I would laugh, but I empathise with the tw*t somewhat, as I think I've just about started to wean myself off making that sort of comment........
