Green Field Hotel in Hoi An is far from the centre. I recommend you stay at Vinh Hung Hotel ( 1, 2 or 3) in old quarter. And in HCM, I recommend you stay: Metropole Hotel ( when I stayed there, there are have summer Promotion)

Greenfield is not too far away you can walk but it might take you 15 mins to walk to the old town .
But also has the advantage that it is closer too the beach which is in the opposite direction too the town .
The accommodation in the old town is always more expensive than outside , but you will prob pay money to and from the old town at night (as the old town is the place where all the restaurants and bars are) . Dont pay more than 20,000 dong to greenfield and back no matter what they say (even at night when they want more money because its late) The sea star Hotel is a ok place to stay and is about 300 meters closer to the town than Greenfield + just as cheap .Its easy to walk to the town from there without getting a taxi , but at night Hoi An is really dark so its prob better getting a motor bike taxi on the way home when drunk (though Hoi An is prob one of the safest places in Vietnam). A little bit of advice , drinking in one of the late night bars (there is only a couple) make shure you pay as you go .Dont let yourself run a bill because at the end of the night you will end up paying for a few extra drinks you did not have , due to the bosses wife adding them when you was too drunk too count how many you had . But the staff there are nice and honest and good friends of mine so i wont say the name of the bar .Hoi An is a nice place i spent about 6 weeks there last year .

Ive just spent 3 months in Vietnam , i got back to England 2 weeks ago .This is my third trip there .
If you have any more questions about the place give me a shout .

Hi karen_c,

paul j is right, Greenfield is not too far from the centre, and it is located on way to Cua Dai beach, an advantage. I've spent some nights in Greenfield, stayed in a room viewing to swimming pool, with aircon, satellite TV, bathtube, wifi, fruit & breakfast voucher. Nice hotel, nice staffs :) If you like a change, i recommend Van Loi hotel, on the bank of Thu Bon river, and just 5-minute walk to centre.

Hoi An is quite small, so you can rent a bike (or motorbike) to go around, pay per day, it is cheap ;) As paul j said, dont let yourself in overdrunk state. You see, good and bad people living together, they do so, just because of a small profit. But trust me, almost Vietnamese people are nice and sincere, especially local people in Hoi An.

Re Ho Chi Minh city, i know a hotel with reasonable price, nice room and nice staffs, but it is away from social places with young people For backpackers, just heading to area: Pham Ngu Lao, De Tham, Bui Vien ...

I am from Ho Chi Minh city, for more info, just post.
