In a shocking turn of events, Sam and I agree.

Hitchhiking has had this great miasma over it for years. I've done it back and forth across the \Canada several times. I had someone try to convert me to God Loving....that's the worse it got. True, this was in the eighties.

I've stuck my thumb out a number of times over the years in various countries, and was always rewarded with a decent person who was just trying to help out.

But now, if I am driving and see a packer who looks well tricked out, I pick him up to balance the Karmic scales. I'm not a slasher murderer or sex fiend (sex fan, sex advocate, sex supporter but not a fiend). Hell, I've picked up DOZENS of boarders trying to get up to Whistler from Vancouver.

It's like everything else, keep your wits about you. Lean in before you get in and grab a sense of the driver. You get an uneasy feeling, don't get in. If you're worried about a killer behind every corner, you're not safe in your home either.

That said, DON'T dress like a Victoria's Secret model if you're by yourself....and female. (Males go ahead, it'll be good for a laugh) Give them the impression your're confident and capable...not dumb and easy and diaphanous....

And remember

GLOT

While it's now tougher to hitch around cities in Canada-especially out of cities since hitching on freeways is against the law-hitching is a very common mode of transportation in rural BC.

Some real ninnies on this thread-no worries it's common in Canada.
This is a great book about hitching in Canada

I must be a real ninnie, I don't see in the original post that they were going to try hitchhiking in Canada. B.C. in particular. 'mrgbrown' tell us in another thread that they will be landing in Chicago and hopes to visit the east coast, perhaps Florida. Perhaps my geography is a bit spotty, but what does hitching in Canada have to do with their plans?

This is the OP on this thread Mike in the North America forum-ninnie is as ninnie does.

to try and keep costs down me and my friend were thinking about hitchhiking but i have been told by lots of people thta this is a really bad idea and another thing is there is no security involved with it (i.e. you may never be picked up etc) any opinions/advice?

(Maybe I should have included a few words on hitching in Mexico-that's in North America too.)

I've hitch-hiked in the outback and in new zealand...but I'd have to be dying before I even thought about hitchhiking in america.
