Easier to know right off that the bank you're with has a good network of ATMs that won't cost you anything don't you think?
Means no time wasted trying different ATMs to see if they charge or not. And if you join the right bank in the first place that problem is solved.
The Commonwealth might have a similar arrangement as HSBC and I don't know how accessible HSBC is in other places outside of OZ.
I agree with Lane Cove- I'm with HSBC and they have excellent customer service, and are obviously common throughout Asia too. They have a decent number of ATMS around, and I believe that the first 5 withdrawals per month from any ATM (except 'special ones like the ones located inside convenience stores) are free which is very handy!
As previously mentioned, they don't have account fees.
