Just for a comparison, check out these figures and distances.

Cairns to Sydney: 2,417 kms/ 1502 miles (according to Google maps)
John O Groats to Lands End and back to Aberdeen: 2,467 kms/ 1533 miles (according to Google maps)
Los Angeles to Calgary: 2535 kms/1575 miles.

Population of United Kingdom: 61 million (July 08 est) Land area: 244,000 sq kms. 246 people per sq km.
Population of Australia: 21 million (July 08 est) Land area: 7.686 MILLION sq kilometres. 2.8 people per sq km.
Population of United States: 303.8 million (July 08 est) Land area: 9.826 million sq kms. 31.8 people per sq km.

See if you can get your head around these figures. There are less than 3 people for each square kilometre in Australia. Compared to United Kingdom of 246 people per square kilometre.

Plenty of open spaces in Australia!!

Hey Michelle!
Travelling with your own transport would be the best option by far. There are so many things to see that are off the main road. Any chance of you hooking up with someone else so you can share the cost of hiring a campervan?
Maybe of of the other single girls(or two) from here would be interested. You might be able to work something out before you leave. If there were three of you everything would be very low cost.
One popular option is to buy a campervan when you arrive and then sell it when you leave. And you're here for a while?
Sharing a campervan means you can keep the costs down during overnight stays as well.
Outside the cities the camping spots are inexpensive and some are free if you're prepared to rough it. If you're on your own you might be staying in hostels?
I don't think train or bus is going to give you enough flexibility. But the buses would be better. The buses will give you more options to move around locally and use the express buses to travel between towns.
I haven't been to England but if you look at the stats from my previous post you might get an idea of the space and distances compared to travelling around Europe or England.
Example: You arrive in Coffs Harbour (NSW north coast) by bus. If you wanted to take a trip to the rainforest at Dorrigo it would probably take a couple of hours by local bus to get there. You could drive there in about 40 minutes and come back whenever you like. If you go by bus you might have to wait a couple of hours to get a connection. And this is going to happen often when you get off the main highway.
Anyway, see what you think. Life is full of options!:)
Cheers,
Keith

Sup Sup Michelle!

If you're arriving on the 27th, then you'll be there in time for the second group which is also when I'm arriving! I'll get you added to the list here when I have them update the other names as well. I added you as a friend so I can keep tabs on the people that are going to be showing up. If you're traveling the east coast of Oz then hit me up when your in the Brisbane area. I fly into there on Monday to take a web design job I was offered. Should be there a month or two.

Anyone else who is starting their travels and are in Oz, hit me up as well!

Really looking forward to this NYE Party and don't worry Keith, we'll do most of our partying outside the campsite.

Umm i think the plan for NY is chilling and surfing on the beach! not sure about the night though im sure theyll be something good going on :)

Hey guys,

Gonna be in Sydney at New Year too and would love to join this wee shindig! Do i just contact Lane Cove Campsite and book in? I will have a campervan - make any difference? - as obviously would like to be in the same bit on the site as all of you!? (or am i too late to book!) aaarrrghhh! hope not!

Surfing is defo on the agenda for me too - even though i know i probably wont get up on the board (at all!) but hey looking like a plonker is part of the excitement/experience!

Thanks in advance!
